The Story

As a textile designer, Carol Gregg began collecting and wearing vintage Japanese kimono in college, and soon found herself exploring antique furniture warehouses in China in the late ‘90s. Known as “Chief Hen,” she hatched Red Egg as a way to share the cultural and design aesthetic that excited her; Gump’s and Horchow recognized the line’s potential early on, gravitating toward the Asian-inspired antique pieces tailored for a modern, Western interior style. Two decades later, many of those original, signature pieces—painted in bright lacquer colors—are recognized as classics by the trade and are still in the line. Indeed, many designers often buy them for their own homes because they love them so much.

Not a company that believes that new is always better, Red Egg sees good design as sustainable, in addition to fresh, fun, and quirky. For that reason, there are typically one or two new products found here each season, often with variations on a theme. Even so, a visit to the immersive flagship showroom, the only one housed in an actual home at Market, is always warranted. Indeed, not only is this the only place in town to see furniture displayed in its natural habitat, but the Red Egg house is a natural gathering place for a who is who in the home furnishings trade, with interesting people typically congregating on the wide front porch.

Open year round, appointments not necessary, but appreciated.
